Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booties
I didn’t expect this simple pattern to be so popular, but I’m getting requests! Sorry the links broke with the blogdeath. Here’s the goods.
Are your feet cold, too? Even with good wool socks? Even tucked under a mohair blankie? You need Yo Mama’’s Big Fat Booties! Knit doubled worsted weight yarn, they”re chunky, funky, and sure to warm your toes. Wear them over your good wool socks and under the mohair blankie. I finished the second one last night, and went to bed with warm feet for the first time since September 2005.
Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booties
Gauge: 17 sts 25 rows = 4″/10cm
Needles: Double Pointed Needles US size 7 or size to give gauge
Yarn: 280 yards worsted weight wool or blend. Sample show was knit in Horstia Tweed. Yarn is used doubled throughout.
Instructions
Cast on 40 sts using long-tailed cast on method. Join circularly, taking care not to twist stitches. Knit three rounds, work four rounds in k1p1 ribbing. Knit all sts until piece measures 3.5″.(measure with cuff rolled), completing the round.
Heel Flap
Knit across 10 sts. Turn, sl1, and purl 19 sts. These 20 stitches will form the heel flap; the remaining stitches are the instep. Work heel flap in stockinette stitch or heel stitch (see below) as desired, for 18 rows, slipping the first stitch of every row.
Turn Heel
Row 1 (RS): knit 12, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 2: sl1, p5, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 3: sl1, knit to one stitch befrore the gap formed by turning the last RS row. SSK together the stitches before and after the gap, then k 1 more st. Turn.
Row 4: sl1, p to one stitch befrore the gap formed by turning the last RS row. P2tog the stitches before and after the gap, then p 1 more st. Turn.
Continue in this fashion, until all heel flap stitches have been decreased. You should have 12 stitches on the heel.
Knit all heel stitches. Pick up 10 stitches from the heel flap side. Knit across instep. Pick up and knit 10 stitches from the other heel flap side. 52 stiches.
If necessary, rearrange stitches so that the beginning of the round begins in the middle of the heel stitches.
Decrease Gusset
Round 1: Knit to 2 sts before the instep, k2tog. Knit across instep stitches. SSK, then knit to end of round.
Round 2: knit all stitches.
Work thus, decreasing gusset every other round until 40 sts remain. (Feel free to increase more or fewer rounds to make the bootie fit your foot.) Work straight until foot measures 5.5″ from the gusset, about 8″ from the back of the heel. If your foot is longer than mine, of course, you should make it as long as you need. Basically work until the sock comes up to the base of your toes.
Toe Shaping
Round 1: Knit to last 2 foot bottom sts, k2tog, ssk, knit instep stitches to last two, k2tog, ssk, knit to end of round.
Round 2: knit all sts.
Repeat these two rounds until 24 sts remain. Decrease every round twice more. Graft toe.
